California Baptist University soccer teams took charge of the first round of the National Christian College Athletic Association championship tournament Wednesday, both winning 3-0.
Both teams entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed in the bracket.
For the Men’s team, Southwestern Assemblies of God University gave the Lancers their 16th win this season , a new school record for wins in a season.
“I’m pleased with the result and happy with the performance,” Head Coach Ryan Jorden told cbulancers.com.
Carlos Figueroa, Willie Rupert and Jonathan Fausto scored for the Lancers.
Figueroa opened the scoring with a long range goal early on.
“We’re going to play teams who work really hard. We have to be intelligent, and this was an intelligent performance by everyone,” Jorden said.
The Women’s team took on Colorado Christian University in the first round and moved past their opponents.
Lindsay Vesling scored first for the Lancers during the first half. A goal from Fabiola Zanella de Silva quickly followed, and finally Eva Solis scored, leaving the Lancers up 3-0 at the end of the half.
The Lancers did not score in the second half, but shut out Colorado Christian to move on to the second round.
“We’re very pleased with the results we got today,” Head Coach Kristin St. Clair told cbulancers.com. “We were a little rusty opening the game, but the players worked through it and we got the result we wanted.”
Both Men and Women’s teams have 16 wins thus far and are looking to make their way to the NCCAA championship game on Saturday, Dec. 3.
