If Apple Inc. has a smaller iPad in the works, it could make a not so “mini” effect on the tablet market, analysts report.
Apple still hasn’t ackn-owledged the existence of the iPad Mini, but configurations and pricing are being released by a large consumer electronic giant’s inventory system.
The new iPad is rumored to come in 16 different configurations. The rumored iPad has a 7.9 inch display and would range from an 8gb Wi-Fi only model for $249, to a 64gb 4G LTE model for $650.
Zagg.com, a well-known screen protector and case manufacturer for many different models and brands, has created a link to an “iPad Mini” in its “Apple Devices” tab. The company’s website currently has a link to a screen protector for the rumored, not yet announced, device.
The lower price and size reduction offers incentive for students more reason to purchase the tablet.
“I would definitely buy the iPad Mini if it’s real,” Meghan Martinez, sophomore graphic design major, said. “It may be much smaller and easier to carry around and the price drop would be a major plus.”
The smaller size and lower price allow Apple to compete with Amazon’s Kindle tablets and Google’s Android tablets and gain even more of the market share.
The latest market research numbers from iSuppli.com calculates that Apple currently holds 69.9 percent of the global market share with the iPad.
Apple has confirmed an event to announce a new product, whether this is the long awaited iPad Mini, or another product being upgraded, is unknown. Rumors point straight to a new iPad, which may be ready for purchase as early as Nov. 2.
The invitations from Apple mentioned, “We’ve got a little more to show you. Please join us for an invitation-only event at the California Theatre in San Jose, Calif. on Oct. 23 at 10:00 a.m.”
