New York City may be the fashion capital of the world, but it will not be the only city this year to showcase some unique fashion across the runway.
The first “Destination Style” fashion show will take place on Saturday, Nov. 17, in downtown Riverside from 2-4 p.m.
“We believed that because of the success of our previous event ‘Fashion’s Night Out’ having a fashion show and showcasing different local designers would be a great idea,” said Janice Penner, a chairwoman of the Destination Style Fashion Show. “It is our way of giving back to our hardworking designers and helping them get their work seen.”
The fashion show, featuring looks for the fall and winter seasons, will be split into three different sections. The first section will showcase the work of different downtown designers. The next section will feature the fashion of an up-and-coming designer Jerika Lynn. Ending the fashion show are the Fashion of Riverside vendors, whose stores are located in Aurea Vista at 3480 University Ave.
Penner said that the biggest wish is for people to become more aware of the fashion options located in downtown Riverside.
“The biggest lesson we learned in our last showcase was that people had no idea about the kind of fashion that was displayed in downtown Riverside,” Penner said. “It is very important for us that we celebrate the fashion district of the Inland Empire.”
Hanna Ingulsrud, senior behavioral science major, and Allyx Westra, junior sociology major, were both surprised and excited when they first heard about the “Destination Style” fashion show.
“I love that idea of a fashion show that features clothes I can actually afford,” Ingulsurd said of Saturday’s event.
Westra said they both frequently hang out downtown and cannot wait to see what the show has to offer.
In the future, “Destination Style” organizers say they hope to host another fashion show for spring and summer, and also eventually branch out to national fashion shows.
“We have a lot of very hardworking and talented designers, whose work definitely deserves to get noticed,” Penner said.
“Destination Style” will also have special offers on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 24, and guests will have the chance to win “Destination Style” gift baskets.
The fashion show will be located on the southwest corner of University Avenue and Lemon Street in downtown Riverside.
Organizers advise attendees to get to the venue at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the show for a good seat.
