As the championship approaches, players in the intramural flag football league are feeling the pressure.
For teams like Chicken Thighs, much is at stake in the upcoming games. With legacy teams still in the running, every player is holding their breath.
“…after struggling the first four games we knew we had to win out to have a chance. We at least put ourselves in a good spot to hopefully get in,” said Team Captain Alec Berghorst, senior architecture major.
Twinkle Toes and Ring By Spring have consistently performed well in recent years, with Ring By Spring emerging as one of the teams to beat, according to referee Isaiah Hreische, sophomore civil engineering major. They face tough competition from teams like Flush, Dig-N-Dine, and SIUUUUU. While these teams have multiple wins, several underdogs are still in the running.
Currently, 22 teams are signed up for the men’s championship league and 11 for the women’s league. In the women’s league, Twinkle Toesies leads the standings, followed closely by the Flamingos.
Leslie Bravo, senior forensic chemistry major and captain of the Flagmingos, is focused on enjoying the season. “This has been my favorite team so far. We have a great group of girls—energized and positive. Super good vibes,” Bravo said.
Like many in the league, Bravo is keeping an eye on former champions such as the Hail Marys and Twinkle Toesies.
Both leagues began weekly games in October, with enrollment taking place throughout September. Fans can look forward to the Fortuna Bowl, the ultimate battleground for the championship, on Family Weekend, Nov. 16, on the Front Lawn.
Regardless of which teams make it to the finals, students and parents can anticipate cheering for their favorites. As players focus on their game, fans are encouraged to watch the matches and track the scores.
