California Baptist University has its fair share of popular hashtags on social media, from #LanceUp for athletics to #CBUOutside for Community Life events.

#LanceUp flies onto Twitter as Lancer athletes gear up for a game. Pictures are selected using #CBUOutside as Community Life markets for events. Simmons Hall resident advisers selected #TheSimmonsBunch as their themed hashtag.

#LanceUp as a CBU hashtag originated with the softball team. Bill Barber, head softball coach for the Lancers, said after hearing about Arizona University’s “Bear Down” saying, a couple of CBU softball players began using the phrase “Lance Up,” which quickly picked up popularity with the rest of the softball team.

The phrase was adopted by the Athletic Department in the fall of 2013 and became a popular hashtag.

“We were looking for a new hashtag last fall and liked the way that (Lance Up) sounded. It’s like gearing up for battle,” said Samantha Sheppard, director of Sports Information.

Another well-used CBU hashtag is #CBUCreate, which has been used by the Office of Community Life for an annual Instagram competition since the spring of 2012. This event provides students the opportunity to show a wide variety of artwork from photography to paintings.

“We were created by a Creator and one of the ways that we can honor and glorify (God) is through being creative,” said Chris Hofschroer, assistant dean of students.

Community Life also uses #CBUOutside, created in the fall of 2012 by Jon McWhorter, former director of recreation programs. This hashtag provides students with the opportunity to share pictures of their excursions during the Community Life-sponsored Outdoor Adventures. The pictures are used by Community Life for marketing.

CBU hashtags have also found a home in living areas around campus.

“The Simmons Hall hashtag is used for the residents of Simmons Hall to show their Simmons pride,” said Catherine Rice, senior early childhood studies major and a community adviser for Residence Life.

In Simmons Hall, the resident adviser staff makes a themed hashtag every year. This year has been dubbed #TheSimmonsBunch with the intention of bringing residents together as a family.

“The hashtags have been a great reminder to the residents what our building stands for and what we are about,” said Rice.
