The Office of Community Life at California Baptist University offers students the opportunity to play recreational sports on both a competitive and leisurely level.

Although the fall was dominated by flag football, intramural basketball takes center stage during the spring semester.

The intramural basketball season consists of three separate leagues, giving students more options from which to choose.

There are two competitive leagues, one for both men and women, as well as a co-ed league, which is geared toward students who are only looking to have fun.

Competitive leagues consist of serious teams who have one goal in mind: to get to the CBU 2K15 Championship game in March, which determines the team that wins all the glory.

One team in particular that has high hopes of winning the competitive men’s league is 2K. Tremayne Gipson, senior kinesiology major and captain of the team, said it takes a lot to get back to the championship.

“It takes a group of individuals who all want the same thing, which is to win,” he said. “At the same time, it’s about having fun and just enjoying the moment.”

Last spring, the Hoosiers won the men’s competitive league. The team returns this year, hoping to reclaim to championship trophy.

Gabriel Lara, sophomore Christian studies major and member of the Hoosiers, said he likes his team’s chance at a repeat championship.

“We lost a lot of seniors, but we picked some other talent, so I believe we have a great chance again,” Lara said.

This season many players believe team chemistry is a key component to go all the way to the championship. Kurt Robinson, sophomore film studies major, is no exception to this kind of thinking.

“The boys I play with have lived in the gym all this year. We know each other’s moves so well. If you get us on the same squad, it’s a win,” Robinson said. “The only thing that can stop us is ourselves.”

All leagues, competitive and recreational, began Jan. 20 and continue until Feb. 25. The men’s competitive league hosts games in the Recreation Center on Monday nights from 9 to 11 p.m., Tuesday nights from 7 to 11 p.m. and Friday afternoons from 3 to 5 p.m.

The women’s competitive league hosts games at the same time as the men’s, but the days change to Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The co-ed league has games on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m., respectively, and Fridays from 3 to 5 p.m.
