California Baptist University’s swim and dive teams had a record-breaking weekend at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships Feb. 11-14.
Both the men’s and women’s team had a good meet, some even breaking their recorded times and scores from the previous year. But on the third day of competition, the Lancer women’s diving team showed true sportsmanship not only in the pool but in the way they treated one of their competitors.
During a regular practice Feb. 10, Amanda Jennings, a diver from Colorado Mesa University, sustained a wrist injury that prevented her from competing.
Breanne Schlenger, sophomore psychology and sociology double major, and Lauren Skinner, sophomore psychology major, decided together that if either won the event they would present their gold medal to Jennings.
After the event was over, Skinner’s name was called and she claimed her spot at the top of the podium, earning her a gold medal.
Skinner kept her word by having the meet’s announcer call Jennings to the podium, enabling her to surrender her gold medal.
“We decided to do this because she is a really strong competitor, and honestly, she could have won the competition had it not been for her injury,” Skinner said.
