APU retains Smith versus Smith trophy in 7th annual competition
The annual Smith Hall of California Baptist University versus Smith of Azusa Pacific University was held April 9 on the Front Lawn at CBU, where APU defended their title.
The event has been going on for seven years and consists of different sports and activities in which men from each university take part.
Austin Boaman, resident director of CBU’s Smith Hall, said the event is meant to bring the men from both schools together for community.
Noah O’Kelley, freshman Christian studies major and CBU Smith Hall resident, said he chose to compete because he wanted to bring his competitive spirit to the team.
“I decided to take part in Smith versus Smith because I felt like I could contribute something to the competition,” O’Kelley said. “In general, I am a really competitive person.”
The event began with a game of dodgeball, Buck Buck, which is a human pyramid game, and would move on to the Van Dyne Gym for ping pong and a game of Super Smash Bros. The last activity to take place was Ultimate Frisbee that would determine the winner of the event.
The winner was determined by the points accumulated during the day in each activity.
CBU’s Smith Hall took the win for dodge ball 3-2. APU responded with back-to-back wins in Buck Buck, ping pong, dodgeball and Super Smash Bros.
The majority of the points, and ultimately, the victory, was earned by APU, resulting in their defense of the trophy .
”We put up a good fight,” said Jesse Gandt, freshman music education and exercise science double major. “APU ended up coming on top and I can say with full confidence we tried our hardest.”
