For just the second time in U.S. history, a president returned to power after leaving office. President Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration marked a turning point as the nation tuned in to witness a leader reassert his vision for America amid deep political divides.

Like Ronald Reagan’s inauguration in 1985, Trump’s inauguration was moved indoors to the Capitol Rotunda due to extreme cold. The Capitol Rotunda, an iconic circular hall beneath the Capitol dome, provided an intimate setting for the ceremony. A livestream of the ceremony was arranged at Capital One Arena to accommodate supporters, allowing a larger audience to participate in the historic event.

Key technology figures were present during the ceremony, reflecting a significant shift in the administration’s relationship with the tech sector. Some of the notable attendees included Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg. Some tech leaders were seated directly behind the first family, indicating their significant status at the event.

During President Trump’s 30-minute speech, he laid out his vision for the future of the United States, promising a renewed sense of national pride and global respect.

“The golden age of America begins right now. From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world. We will be the envy of every nation. And we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer,” Trump said.

President Trump emphasized a commitment to revitalizing American manufacturing and reducing reliance on imports. The policy was designed to benefit American citizens and protect domestic industries. Companies that chose to maintain production abroad could face tariffs on their imports into the U.S. Effective Feb. 1, Trump announced plans to enforce a 25% tariff. He focused on protecting U.S. industries and challenging China with these measures.

Adirah Walker, junior social work major and member of the student senate, shared her perspective on President Trump’s policies during his second inauguration.

“It’s going to affect small businesses in the United States, but I feel like we need to have some money here for us instead of just sending it out,” Walker said.

Trump also emphasized a stricter immigration policy during his speech. Plans were announced to deploy military forces to the U.S.-Mexico border and enhance border security.

Dr. Chase Porter, professor of political science, weighed in on President Trump’s second inaugural address and the direction of his administration.

“President Trump has made it quite clear that he intends to accomplish as much of the agenda that he has been articulating as quickly as possible, through executive action if possible,” Porter said.

Matthew Mendoza, junior political science and international studies double major, expressed optimism about the incoming administration.

“Overall, I expect a continuation of his first-term policies but with a sharper focus on economic nationalism, border policy and immigration,” Mendoza said.

The 2025 inauguration was a defining moment in the nation’s history, one that redefined leadership and reignited debates about its future.
