The phrase “Live Your Purpose” is familiar to California Baptist University students. Throughout their time at CBU, students hear stories about how others have discovered their purpose while attending the university. But what does it actually look like to live that purpose?

Gavin Andrew, director of new student programs and CBU alumnus, reflected on what “Live Your Purpose” means to him.

“God has given us all special, unique talents and a chance to come to CBU and figure out what those are and how you’re gonna leave this place to Live Your Purpose. It’s God revealing in our lives how He wants us to be used by Him to impact His kingdom,” Andrew said.

Students encounter opportunities to explore that purpose through classes, relationships, campus involvement and experiences beyond the classroom.

Adrienne Venning, senior marketing major, has found that her understanding of purpose continues to develop throughout her time at CBU.

“Each semester and season here at school, I have been able to walk and grow as a person and I think there is a sense of purpose you find in the growing and changing. The Lord is good and faithful in all seasons of life and I’ve been lucky enough to see that here at CBU,” Venning said.

Purpose can take shape differently depending on a student’s experiences.

Sierra Catzin Murillo, senior early childhood studies major, said an unexpected breakup and the friendships that supported her during that time helped shape the way she viewed herself and her future.

“During my breakup, I felt like I had no one to help me through that. But the friendships I made at CBU showed me that there are people who truly care about you and see you for who you are during those hard times and being involved with the community at CBU helped me see who I truly am and want to be,” Murillo said.

Andrew said relationships with faculty and staff can play a role in helping students recognize their strengths and direction.

“People really care. You’re not just your ID number, they know your name [and] they know your strengths and weaknesses. Professors take the time to know their students and that’s what’s helpful,” Andrew said.

“Live Your Purpose” is a phrase CBU students hear throughout their college experience, but discovering that purpose does not look the same for everyone. Some may find direction through their major or future career, while others may discover it through relationships, faith or unexpected experiences.

Living your purpose can become more than simply knowing what you want to do after graduation. It can mean recognizing what gives your life meaning and choosing to pursue it each day.
