Magnolia Crossing sits outside the main gates of California Baptist University, giving residents a different route to campus than students living in other residence areas.

Students travel between Magnolia Crossing and the main campus by walking, driving or taking the university shuttle. For some residents, the trip has become part of their daily routine and offers time to reflect, connect with others and prepare for the day.

Kiera Frazier, sophomore political science and public relations double major, preferred driving to campus from Magnolia Crossing. During the warmer weather at the beginning of the semester, Frazier said driving gave her time to cool down and prepare for the day.

“I love to just get in my car and sing. You know, music and singing, to have a little moment to myself before I’m in class,” Frazier said.

Other Magnolia Crossing residents preferred using their commute as an opportunity to spend time outdoors.

Kate Fenn, sophomore political science and intercultural studies double major, preferred walking to campus. She said the walk gave her time to reflect and appreciate her surroundings.

“I think it’s a good way to start my morning out… [and] I benefit so much from nature,” Fenn said.

The walk also gave Fenn time to enjoy the trees and greenery along the path while appreciating parts of campus life that might otherwise be overlooked.

While some students choose to drive or walk from Magnolia Crossing, others use the university shuttle to travel to the main campus.

Mike Shanahan, shuttle driver, said one of the most meaningful parts of his job is connecting with students during the ride.

“When you get out, and you start talking with people, it’s just amazing,” Shanahan said.

Shanahan said small interactions, including greeting students by name, can help create a welcoming experience.

Whether students walk, drive or take the shuttle, traveling from Magnolia Crossing gives residents opportunities to reflect, connect with others and experience more of the CBU campus on the way to class.
