By the end of the night, 13 awards in a variety of categories were won by California Baptist University’s College of Architecture, Visual Arts and Design on March 7 at the American Advertising Awards Competition held at the Mission Inn in downtown Riverside.
The ADDY Awards showcase the work of designers throughout the Inland Empire. This year, CAVAD received four awards each in the gold, silver and bronze categories.
Morgan Hydinger, senior graphic design major, won Best of Show in the student category to total the 13 awards.
Although the CAVAD program did not submit as many pieces as other design programs in the area, Michael Berger, director of design and photography at CBU, said the CAVAD program competed well against other established art schools in the area.
Along with Hydinger, Sarita Le Roux, senior graphic design major, and CAVAD professor Trever Hoehne won gold awards. Silver awards went to graphic design majors Emily Poulin, and Jessica Schoellerman, both sophomores, and senior Shawn Gorton. Junior Taylor Griner, senior Jazeena Pineda and senior Kelsey Doolittle all took home bronze awards. Berger received three awards: one each in the gold, silver and bronze.
Schoellerman also entered a Doodle Contest that took place the night of the ADDYs, where individuals could submit sketches. A few days later she found out she won first prize and a day of studio photography valued just under $2,000.
“I held off for four years entering this contest until I thought (the department) could compete,” Berger said. “This is our second year in the competition and we showed well.”
Bringing home two awards for her work, a gold award and Best of Show for students, Hydinger submitted an advertisement she created last semester. For the assignment, she single-handedly styled, shot, edited and laid out a mock Anthropologie catalogue. She said the process was lengthy, but that she really liked the way the final product came together.
“I have invested a lot into my work and the design program so it was neat to see my work recognized at a larger scale,” Hydinger said. “It’s easy to get stuck in the CBU bubble, but when I won it was a great confirmation that my hard work has paid off.”
“The highlight of the night was Morgan’s win for Best of Show,” Berger said. “Morgan works hard and it paid off. Her Anthropologie project was flawless and showcased her talent.”
Gold award winners Berger, Hoehne, Hydinger and Le Roux will advance to the second tier of competition with other local winners at a district level.
This spring will have 24 graphic design graduates showcasing their work at the downtown CBU gallery. Due to the size of the 2014 graduating class, there will be two senior shows, one on April 8 and another on April 15. These shows will feature the work that CBU seniors have created throughout their time in the CAVAD program.
