Jessica Bills -- Staff and students square off in an early season game.

The 2012 intramural basketball season tipped off in the Van Dyne Gym on Jan. 23 with one major new addition – a new recreation only league of teams.

This league is separate from the competitive league and is for teams that only care to focus on playing for fun not to compete for a championship. This helps to make the games more enjoyable with less blowouts and forfeits.

Community Life created this new league in an effort to accommodate this type of team and make the experience enjoyable for the maximum number of students.

Games for both the competitive and recreational leagues are played Monday through Thursday nights as well as Saturday mornings. The season began on Jan. 23 and will continue until March 8.

Interest is high for the male and female leagues as 22 teams are competing in the men’s competitive league, 13 in the female league and another six are in the recreational league.

All of those teams total 364 students, staff and faculty that are participating on the court this year.

So far, female teams have all competed in one game, and male teams have participated in two to three. Through Feb. 1, high scoring “Fuzzy Wuzzy” is leading the men’s competitive league with a 3-0 record. Six female teams share first place with a 1-0 record.
