Every summer, dozens of chart-topping singles are released, but only one can be the summer anthem of 2013.
These catchy tunes are the songs that, despite months of endless play on Top-40 radio, still have listeners cranking up their stereos and singing along.
Each music listener has an individual taste in music, but an anthem rings most in with a melodious hook that never seem to leave the mind.
California Baptist University students discussed their picks for the summer anthem of 2013.
“The start of a song is what really gets people. The first 20 seconds are the most important because they need to have a hook, something to draw the listener to want to hear more,” said Mallory Rowland, senior communications disorders major.
A summer anthem captures the spirit of summer. The song must capture the buzz and excitement of the summer season.
“Summer is the most lively time of the year so it only makes sense that an anthem be a song that gets people excited and humming along,” Rowland said.
Daft Punk’s single “Get Lucky” was the embodiment of this idea for Rowland this summer.
“I love this song!” Rowland said. “I hear it everywhere and I can’t help but want to listen to it over and over again. It brightens my day and puts me in a good mood every time I hear it.”
With a plethora of options and differing musical tastes, settling on a single summer anthem is often quite difficult.
Shane Blake, senior English and Christian behavioral studies double major, chose Macklemore’s hit “Can’t Hold Us” as his summer anthem.
“An anthem is something you can’t get out of your head, and that you love to hear no matter how overplayed it is,” Blake said. “It’s got to be rockin’ and have an awesome beat. A song way too catchy to pass up and that’s exactly what Macklemore’s song is.”
“Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke, “We Can’t Stop” by Miley Cyrus, “Love Somebody” by Maroon 5 and “I Don’t Care (I Love It)” by Icona Pop were some of the biggest hits this summer.
CBU students voted, and “Blurred Lines” was the song most Lancers picked for the 2013 summer anthem.
Whatever a person’s anthem, it will serve as a reminder of the memories, adventures and sunburns made during the summer.
