It is hard to believe one of the most famous teenage comedies of all time will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. April 30 will mark a decade since the popular movie “Mean Girls” came to theaters in 2004.

Since its release, the movie has been quoted in conversation and idolized by young women and girls. The film has become an icon of American culture and the film continues to influence pop culture today.

“I can’t believe it has been 10 years since ‘Mean Girls’ came out,” said Lyndsey Jackson, senior healthcare administration major at California Baptist University. “My first time seeing it was in middle school, and I remember thinking that it was one of the funniest movies I had ever seen.”

In recent years, hundreds of YouTube videos have been created as parodies, and a sequel has been filmed in honor of the movie. It appears as though viewers still cannot get enough of the movie.

“The funny thing is, I still quote lines from the movie almost every day,” Jackson said. “Even though I am 10 years older and have experienced so much life, I still find it so relevant and just as hilarious as it was when I was 12 (years old).”

Words such as “fetch” and “grool” have consequently been adopted by many fans as a result of “Mean Girls.”

Aside from the humor and quotable material, perhaps one of the biggest impacts the film has had on women and girls everywhere is the light it has shed on how cruel behavior can effect a person.

Rhyan Bates, freshman kinesiology and Christian studies double major, explained that the movie has been a tremendous part of her life in more ways than one.

“It had a big impact on me because ‘The Plastics’ were a perfect example of how not to act,” Bates said. “After watching it and growing up with friends, I knew that I needed to treat (friends) with kindness the way they deserve to be treated. Aside from that, though, it was one of the most hilarious movies I’ve ever seen.”

“Mean Girls” has undoubtedly become one of the most memorable films of its time and will most likely continue to be popular for generations to come.
