Small group brings ‘Hope’ to the nation

Every year, the Shelby and Ferne Collinsworth School of Music at California Baptist University picks musicians who audition for choir small groups, including “Hope.”

Once the groups are picked they go perform for churches on Sundays and go on a three-week summer tour.

Hope traveled to 39 states, going all the way to Maine and Florida and then coming back to California where they performed at vacation Bible schools and churches.

Hope was led by 2016 alumna Rebecca Orr. Orr’s job consisted of planning arrival times, picking the music set lists and coordinating housing and food. Her job allowed her to develop relationships with students in Hope that went beyond the music.

“Very close friendships come out of these groups so I know I made amazing friends,” Orr said. “I am thankful for each one of them and how they continued
to grow.”

Jesse Gandt, sophomore exercise science and music education double major, said through the Small Group, God did great things and opened doors.

“God is good, man,” Gandt said. “ I was struggling a lot financially and I couldn’t pay second semester’s tuition. Professor Dahlgren offered me an additional scholarship that would cover everything if I auditioned and got the spot. I wanted to get more experience as a piano accompaniment, and on top of that, I wanted to
serve God.”
