Woo Week kicked off with the Minifig Mixer on Monday, Sept. 23, at the Innovators Auditorium, where students gathered to build their unique Lego figures.
The mixer featured challenges like building the tallest tower or fastest car, with prizes for the winners. The event included mascots, a screening of “The Lego Movie,” and large balloons scattered around, adding to the feeling of childlike wonder.
The mixer was packed. Isabel Romero, senior electrical and computer engineering major, said, “The line was out the door before the event even started.”
The event offered many tables with Lego buckets for students to build anything their imaginations could create. Many shared memories of playing with Legos as children, recalling building sets, visiting Lego stores, and having Lego competitions with their families.
Sebastian Meleka, freshman mechanical engineering major, said, “I have mostly favorable memories with Lego, besides stepping on them.”
However, some female students expressed disappointment with the lack of feminine features among the available Lego pieces. They noted there weren’t many hair or clothing options, but most students were still excited and proud of their creations.
Jamie Eriksen, director of Campus Activities, said, “Every year we must get creative as we work with limited budgets [and Legos are not cheap!]—so we may not get every Minifig type or feature. However, we think we had a great mix of Minifig parts, as well as tons of Legos to free-build with. All of which were provided free to students! We think that’s a great value.”
In the end, the mixer had an enjoyable atmosphere and plenty of minifigures for all.
