Woo Week’s Day Two at California Baptist University’s Community Life featured a 2000s karaoke night for CBU students on Tuesday, Sept. 26. Students arrived at the Community Life Lounge to enjoy throwback snacks like Gushers and Pop Rocks, along with a variety of drinks, adding to the nostalgic atmosphere.

Community Life interns also set up a station for students to decorate sunglasses. While the focus was on karaoke, Community Life offered several fun activities for students to enjoy, even for those not performing.

Sophomore kinesiology major and Community Life intern Mia Deken said, “During Woo Week, there are events every single day the entire week. The purpose of Woo Week is to get the newer students and people who maybe have not met people yet to events so they can meet people.”

Community Life aimed to create a fun week before the busyness of student life kicked in, continuing to build the CBU community.

Deken said the karaoke night was “2000s karaoke specifically. I just think it is super popular right now. We are all in the age where we remember the 2000s and remember the songs. It’s a very nostalgic feel; we have fun nostalgic snacks… It is just to give a fun edge on karaoke.”

Throughout the night, students sang various 2000s hits, including Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” and High School Musical’s “Breaking Free.”

Freshman pre-nursing major Katelyn Hartman attended the event to showcase her love of singing.

“I love singing, like I am a part of UCO [one of the choirs here at CBU]. I think that it is such a good time and I love watching other people sing too. It’s just so fun to like watch people perform,” Hartman said.

Hartman excitedly performed “Before He Cheats,” explaining why the song was perfect for a nostalgic karaoke night.

“It’s a banger. I had to,” Hartman said.

The song was a crowd-pleaser, with students singing along to the heartbreak anthem with Hartman.

While students involved in music found another space to perform, karaoke night also offered a platform for all students to showcase their talents in front of their peers.

Micah Suk, sophomore computer science major who also attended and performed, said, “I just like singing, and there’s not exactly a lot of opportunities to sing on campus in front of people.”

The night was a throwback to the 2000s as students sang for two hours and created new connections over nostalgic songs. The event fostered the growth of CBU’s community.
