At California Baptist University, the Lancer of the Issue celebrates more than just athletic success; it honors individuals who show outstanding leadership, inspiration and a commitment to uplifting the community. This year, the focus is on athletes who impact both on and off the field, leading with heart, purpose and a vision beyond the game.
The honoree is, organizational leadership graduate student and volleyball libero Amanda Darling, embodies these qualities through her exceptional leadership and dedication. Her focus extends beyond winning, as she strives to create an environment where her teammates excel as athletes and individuals.
“I’d say the biggest thing is the potential these girls have, and I want them to see that,” Darling said. “It’s pushing them more in the gym, the weight room, pushing them to be better people. As a person and an athlete, you can see how far they’ll go, and I want to make sure we hit that potential.”
Recently sidelined by an injury, Darling’s influence remains strong. Her commitment and positive attitude continue to shape the team’s environment and inspire her peers. Darling has received best wishes for a swift recovery and looks forward to her return, as her leadership and character will undoubtedly continue to make an impact.
Darling’s leadership goes beyond physical training; it is rooted in her personal connections with teammates. She understands that effective leadership involves empathy and clear communication.
“The biggest thing I did was learn how people like to be talked to,” Darling said. “It’s important to learn that because it shows you care about them in a way that’s meaningful to them.”
Her ability to tailor communication demonstrates her commitment to fostering a supportive and understanding team environment.
Assistant coach Kristen Fritsche also highlights Darling’s exceptional character and influence.
“Her presence in the gym is special. Amanda is always talking to her team about positive things. As a coach, we don’t always hear that. She presents information in an uplifting way; she’s such a light to be around,” Fritsche said.
Darling’s positive attitude and constructive feedback create a motivating atmosphere that benefits everyone involved.
Fritsche also emphasizes Darling’s respectful approach when addressing concerns.
“When she has concerns about the team, she brings them up in a respectful way and understands we’re all trying to get better,” Fritsche said.
This maturity reflects Darling’s dedication to maintaining a cohesive and progressive team dynamic.
On the court, Darling’s high volleyball IQ and defensive skills not only elevate her own game but also inspire her teammates to improve.
“Her on-court energy and volleyball IQ are really high. She understands the game,” Fritsche said. “She’s a phenomenal defender, and that motivates everybody else to play harder and get better.”
As the first Lancer of the Issue for the 2024-25 academic year, Darling exemplifies leadership with heart and purpose. Her contributions go beyond athletic performance, helping build a culture of encouragement, growth and excellence.
