Heat Wave Continues
Southern California’s heat wave surged back during the first week of October. Authorities have issued heat alerts for parts of California, Nevada and Arizona, expected to remain in effect until around Oct. 11. This second wave of excessive heat caused a flare-up of the Line Fire near Highland, Calif., about 25 minutes from campus.

Port Strike
Early Tuesday, Oct. 1, dockworkers at ports in Maine and Texas went on strike. According to AP News, the strike began after a contract between the ports and around 45,000 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association expired. If the strike continues for a few weeks, inflation could rise again, and a shortage of goods may occur.

Vice Presidential Debate
On Oct. 1, JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential candidate, and Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential candidate, met in New York City for a 90-minute debate. Topics discussed included foreign policy, reproductive rights, threats to democracy and immigration. This was the only vice presidential debate before Election Day.

New Initiatives to Advance Safe and Responsible AI
Governor Gavin Newsom announced new initiatives to promote the safe and responsible use of AI, with a key focus on ensuring ethical use of the technology. The initiatives aim to reduce risks and protect California from potential AI-related threats.
