CBU’s faculty is made up of brilliant minds and influential educators who profoundly impact students through their teaching and character.

A great example of excellent character and remarkable knowledge in academia is Dr. Jeff Cate, professor of New Testament for 30 years.

Beyond his passion for the subjects he taught, Dr. Cate was equally passionate about the students he mentored.

“Teaching is fulfilling because even though I have taught these subjects for 30 years now, it’s still new to the students, and it’s fun to see them catch on and learn,” Dr. Cate said.

Dr. Cate’s enthusiasm for teaching was matched by his desire to impact the lives of his students. One of his current students, Hunter Klise, junior Christian studies major, shared his thoughts on Dr. Cate’s influence.

“Dr. Cate has shown me just how deep studying the Bible can be,” Klise said. “I like his whimsical nature and Christ-like interest in the Gospel of Mark.”

Klise later shared that Dr. Cate’s proficiency in his subject matter had such a profound impact that it motivated him to dive deeper and even pursue learning a new language to better understand the Gospels.

Another former student of Dr. Cate, Thomas Staub, freshman psychology and Christian studies double major, reflected on what he learned in Dr. Cate’s Jesus and the Gospels class.

“I learned more about the amazing intricacies and details of the Gospel,” Staub said. “Most importantly, Dr. Cate taught me the richness and power of the Gospel and the wonderful news it brings to us.”

Staub also expanded on the lasting impact Dr. Cate left on him after completing his class in the fall semester.

“Dr. Cate’s expansive knowledge is impressive, but he does not come across as lofty or proud. He is incredibly kind and thoughtful,” Staub said.

Though only two students shared their experiences, Dr. Cate’s influence extended far beyond the classroom. Through his teaching and his commitment to sharing God’s truth, he continued to shape the lives of many students, leaving a lasting impact.
