In an interconnected modern world, people gained the ability to develop and acquire knowledge of new skills, including language. People found many opportunities to use languages beyond English once they learned them.

Duolingo, an app that teaches new languages in bite-sized chunks, served as a useful tool to enhance knowledge of different languages. The app offered many learning opportunities, from languages like Spanish and French to activities like chess and math. After users downloaded the app, they chose what they wanted to learn and started lessons in that subject.

If users had prior experience, they could take a placement test to bypass lower levels and start at a higher level in the curriculum. The lessons provided practice in speaking, listening, reading and writing in many different languages.

Users moved through units, which contained sections. Each unit consisted of three to nine sections. Each section included about eight lessons that varied from past concept review to speaking and listening challenges. After users completed an entire unit, their overall language score increased.

In a blog written for GeeksforGeeks, an online learning platform, Jahnavi Arora provided more details about how Duolingo worked.

“Learning on Duolingo is like leveling up in a game—earn points, unlock new levels, and compete with friends. The whole process becomes this addictively fun journey. This gamified way isn’t just about learning; it’s about staying motivated, competitive, and consistent, making language learning a way cooler experience,” said Arora.

Duolingo remained one of the most popular language-learning apps. Part of its appeal came from being free, with the option to upgrade to an ad-free experience. With the free version, users saw an ad after every lesson, and the number of lessons they could complete in a day was limited by an energy level.

Several tips and strategies also helped users of the app. One key tip was to maintain a daily streak, as it served as a strong indicator of success in learning a new language.  Duoplanet, a guide to everything Duolingo, shared more on this.

“The importance of your streak is found in the habit that it creates. Learning a language is a long-term commitment. You have to show up every day for a very long time in order to see results,” Duoplanet wrote.

Duolingo proved to be an effective app for consistently learning a new language or skill. Whether someone wanted to learn the basics before visiting another country or dive deeper into a language, it provided an engaging and free opportunity to enhance knowledge.
