Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is often a struggle for students, but reading the Bible daily can enhance the development of one’s spiritual life.

“It is a good idea to find a quiet place by yourself and read the word (of God),” said Henry Zietlow, sophomore applied theology major.

Zietlow said that despite the emphasis often placed on one’s physical health, spiritual health and development is equally important and essential.

“If we are holistic persons, then everything about us is intertwined: body, soul and spirit,” said John Montgomery, dean of Spiritual Life at California Baptist University. “So when we are feeding our spirits and we are spiritually healthy, it has got to somehow affect us physically.”

Daily scripture reading helps feed the spiritual man, as stated in Psalms 119:11 KJV, “Thy word have I hid in my heart that I may not sin against thee.”

Montgomery explained “studying scripture is about asking three questions: What does the Bible say, what does it mean by what it says, and how does it apply to my life?”

He added, that one does what God requires, the Holy Spirit within them does what God has promised, which is to conform to the spirit.

Zietlow said he believes it is through a healthy life- style and reading the Bible that God reveals himself to people. He also said God seeks to bring mankind to himself through the Bible, which is his love letter to humankind.

As a college student, Zeitlow finds it important and fundamental to read the Bible daily and thinks that it is a good idea to find a quiet place where one can be in solitude to do so.

Montgomery said deliberate effort should be made to spend time in God’s word to refresh one’s spiritual life.

Montgomery explained bodily training has some benefits, but godliness has benefits for this life and the life to come.

When people get in the word of God, they are spending time with God and are made more godly. God works in and through them to change them according to his word
